This just-published book is the history of an unusual institution - the General Council of the University of Aberdeen. It comprises all alumni and many serving and retired academic staff and is one of the three governing bodies of the University. A history of the first century of the General council was published in 1963 and in this book Dr Charles Calder, formerly a Lecturer in English at the University, brings history up to date. He has focused on the divers alumni who have shaped the work of the General Council. So it is a story of people, and of the University itself - in a period of unprecedented and interesting change. In a Foreword to the book, Professor Sir Iain Torrance, The University's Pro-Chancellor, says ''I cannot say how much we are endebted to these distinguished and wise women and men.
